A framework for scaling symbiotic nitrogen fixation using the most widespread nitrogen fixer in eastern deciduous forests of the United States

چکیده

Carbon uptake by the terrestrial biosphere depends on supplies of new nitrogen (N) from symbiotic N fixation, but we lack a framework for scaling fixation accurately and predicting its response to global change. We scaled individual fixers (i.e. plants that host N-fixing bacteria), quantifying three key parameters—the abundance fixers, whether they are fixing their rates. apply this black locust, widespread tree in temperate forests eastern United States, harness long-term data southern Appalachian scale trees landscape over succession. Symbiotic Nitrogen Fixation.

Biosphere nitrogen is subjected to rapid turnover, and because it is eventually lost as nitrogen into the atmosphere, its maintenance requires continuous replenishment with reduced nitrogen from atmospheric nitrogen. Biological reduction of nitrogen to ammonia can be performed only by some prokaryotes and is a highly oxygen-sensitive process. The most efficient nitrogen fixers establish a symbi...

Molecular genetics of symbiotic nitrogen fixation.

Although most organisms, including all eucaryotes, cannot assimilate atmospheric dinitrogen (N2), a group of evolutionarily divergent procaryotes are able to reduce N2 directly to ammonia (nitrogen fixation) under a variety of physiological conditions. The molecular genetics of nitrogen fixation has been studied primarily in Klebsiella pneumoniae because of its close taxonomic relation to Esche...

A modified nitrogen budget for temperate deciduous forests in an advanced stage of nitrogen saturation

[1] Recent advances in ecosystem descriptions associated with nitrogen (N) saturated forests allowed us to revise and improve a model of ecosystem productivity to reflect advanced N saturation. We introduce a new description of nitrogen cycling for a forest that is in stage 2 of N saturation on the basis of recent literature. We compared the accuracy of this new description to the conventional ...
